Jon M. Chu Opens Up About Self-Doubt Before 'Crazy Rich Asians'

Jon M. Chu, the director behind blockbusters such as 'Crazy Rich Asians' and 'Wicked', has achieved significant critical acclaim and commercial success. However, the award-winning filmmaker recently revealed a period in his life when he was plagued by self-doubt, questioning whether he would ever succeed in Hollywood.

Jon M. Chu Opens Up About Doubting Himself as a Filmmaker

During a panel at Canva Create 2026's 'Building Worlds: From Script to Spectacle' last month, Chu candidly shared his struggles with self-doubt. According to a report by PEOPLE, despite his current accolades, there was a time when he felt he did not belong in the film industry. He stated, 'When you said my list of movies, it lit up, and you said Crazy Rich Asians. That was a big point in my life. I didn't think I deserved to be in Hollywood. I was discovered and I got very lucky. And when you win the lottery, you think you actually don't know how you got there. So you actually can't win the lottery again.'

Chu emphasized the importance of his team, who supported him through uncertain times. He revealed that he once told his team, 'I'm going to make a movie. I'm going to take five years, and I'm not going to make you any money. Luckily, they were fine with it.' This trust allowed him to take creative risks that eventually paid off.

How the Creative Process Works for Jon M. Chu

During the same panel, Chu discussed his creative process, which relies heavily on intuition and imagination. He explained, 'It either sparks me or not, or I have to go on some journey to find if I connect with it. Other times I'm like, I have to tell this story.' The director admitted that he does not have a set formula for his work, stating that without a personal connection, he cannot predict how a project will unfold.

Chu's journey from self-doubt to acclaim serves as an inspiration for aspiring filmmakers. His honesty about the challenges of the industry highlights the importance of perseverance and a supportive team.
