Karan Johar has shared a glowing review of Prime Video's latest crime drama 'Raakh,' describing the series as both devastating and brilliantly crafted. Taking to Instagram, the director revealed that the show affected him so deeply that he felt compelled to return to social media and express his thoughts. Karan admitted that he had been attempting to stay away from Instagram, but the impact of 'Raakh' changed his plans.
“I was trying to take time off from the gram; I thought I was successful till I saw this gut-wrenching series and felt the need to express myself,” he wrote. The filmmaker said the final episode left him emotionally shaken, making it impossible for him to ignore the feelings the series evoked.
Why 'Raakh' Left Karan Johar Disturbed
Sharing his reaction to the show, Karan said the story stayed with him long after the credits rolled. He noted that the series explores some of the darkest aspects of human nature, which made it a difficult but important watch.
“Disturbed as a parent, as a human being, and as a member of society. The ugliest side of humanity is what Raakh explores,” he wrote. According to Karan, the show effectively highlights how personal trauma and difficult circumstances can never justify giving in to one's darkest instincts.
Karan Johar's High Praise for Director Prosit Roy
The 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' filmmaker was particularly impressed with director Prosit Roy's handling of the subject matter. He praised the filmmaker for maintaining emotional depth without resorting to manipulation.
“What I need to applaud is Prosit Roy's incredible storytelling, strong hold, and non-manipulative approach to emotional depiction, and a special chef's kiss to his undeniable craft,” Karan stated. He described the series as an example of powerful storytelling that trusts its audience while remaining emotionally impactful.
Sonali Bendre and Aamir Bashir Earn Special Mention
Among all aspects of the show, it was the performances that left the strongest impression on Karan. He singled out Sonali Bendre and Aamir Bashir for portraying grieving parents with remarkable authenticity.
“But what I can't get out of my head are the career-defining performances of Sonali Bendre and Aamir Bashir. Their portrayal of grief-stricken parents facing an unsurmountable tragedy left me awestruck. They became the characters, and I salute their depiction,” he wrote.
Karan also applauded Ali Fazal's performance, calling it “exceptional and solid work.” He further acknowledged the contributions of Akash Makhija and Ramandeep Yadav while appreciating Prime Video for supporting such a challenging project.
The Story Behind 'Raakh'
Inspired by the infamous Ranga-Billa case that shocked India in 1978, 'Raakh' transports viewers to late-1970s Delhi. The series follows Sub-Inspector Jayprakash, played by Ali Fazal, as he investigates a crime that becomes increasingly complex and disturbing. Alongside the investigation, the narrative examines grief, fear, and the emotional scars left behind by tragedy, making it much more than a conventional crime thriller.
Wrapping up his review, Karan described 'Raakh' as “devastating and brilliant in equal measure,” making it clear that the series is among the most emotionally affecting shows he has watched in recent times.
