In a revealing new interview, Kavita Khanna, the second wife of late Bollywood legend Vinod Khanna, has shared intimate details of their relationship, describing it as a 'perfect marriage with all the flaws'. Speaking to Loveena Tandon on her YouTube channel, Kavita recounted the initial resistance from her family, the whirlwind romance, and her respectful equation with Vinod's first wife and sons.
Family Was 'Horrified' by the Relationship
Kavita disclosed that while her family ultimately supported her decision to marry Vinod Khanna, they were initially 'horrified' by the idea of her dating him. The concern stemmed from Vinod's status as a divorced superstar and a renowned heartthrob. "He was the heartthrob of so many people, and after he got divorced, he had quite a few girlfriends, so my family was worried that this was just a passing phase for him," she explained. They feared he might leave her, a worry that was put to rest by his unwavering commitment.
A Whirlwind Courtship and Lasting Commitment
The courtship began with Vinod's persistent pursuit. After their first meeting, he would call her up to five times a day, insisting they meet again. Kavita, finding their telephone conversations engaging, eventually agreed. Their connection deepened quickly, leading to marriage just seven months after they started dating. Despite Vinod's immense fame and the constant female attention he received, Kavita said she never felt insecure. "I knew he loved me, he was committed to me," she stated with confidence.
She elaborated on the nature of their bond, saying, "Was it a perfect marriage? It was a perfect marriage with all the flaws that a perfect marriage has and all the challenges, and there were many but I never doubted him." She added that while there was not a single day she wanted to be without her husband, it was not always a 'bed of roses'.
On Akshaye, Rahul, and Geetanjali: Respect and Boundaries
Kavita also spoke about her relationship with Vinod Khanna's children from his first marriage to Geetanjali—actors Akshaye Khanna and Rahul Khanna. She considered them her own because they were Vinod's, but clarified her role. "They were mine, but they weren't my sons," she said, explaining that she never tried to replace their mother. "I never tried to be a 'mother' to both because they had the best mother they could have."
Her equation with Geetanjali was one of mutual respect and cordiality. Dismissing dramatic narratives, Kavita said, "There was no discord whatsoever. There was a lot of mutual respect and there were boundaries." She urged people to move beyond fairy-tale tropes of victims and villains, emphasizing that sensible adults make choices and life moves on. Vinod Khanna, who famously left his career to follow Osho in the late 1970s, passed away in April 2017 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy in film and a family that remembers him with nuanced affection.
