Rita Bhattacharya, the former wife of legendary playback singer Kumar Sanu and mother of singer Jaan Kumar Sanu, has expressed profound shock after being served a defamation notice by her ex-husband. In an exclusive conversation with Bombay Times, she reacted to the legal action, disclosed the staggering compensation amount demanded, and detailed the emotional toll it has taken on her and their three adult sons.
"He Is Asking For 50 Crores": Rita's Stunned Reaction
Rita Bhattacharya revealed her disbelief upon receiving the legal notice. She claims the document demands a compensation of ₹50 crores, a figure far higher than the ₹30 lakh reported in some media outlets. "I'm shocked. He is filing a case against the mother of his three grown-up sons," she stated. Expressing her distress, she lamented, "I don't know how Sanu is dreaming that I have so much money. It is really sad."
She further questioned why she was being singled out for legal action when others have also spoken publicly about their past. While not naming anyone directly, her comments hinted at Kumar Sanu's ex-girlfriend, actress Kunickaa Sadanand, who recently spoke about a past relationship with a married man inside the Bigg Boss house. "He is attacking me without attacking any other person," Rita pointed out. "What is being discussed elsewhere is more insulting, and it is very insulting for my children also."
Years of Blocked Communication and a Plea Before the Wedding
When asked if she attempted to resolve the matter privately with Kumar Sanu, Rita maintained that direct communication has been impossible for years. She asserted that Sanu has blocked her and their children from contacting him. "I never got a chance to talk to him. Neither me nor my children ever got a chance... We are blocked on his number," she explained.
Rita recalled reaching out through his office earlier, particularly during a sensitive family time. "I contacted his secretary and requested him to please stop this. It is a very big insult. My son was getting married, and the in-laws were asking questions," she said, adding that she has preserved all related messages and recordings.
"I Will Meet Sanu in Court After 31 Years": A Painful Return
Calling the situation deeply humiliating, Rita emphasized that her sons—aged approximately 37, 34, and 31—are suffering. "My children are not kids. They are grown-up men... I don't think it is their crime that they are answering people," she said.
The prospect of returning to court is especially painful for the 63-year-old. She revealed that the first time Kumar Sanu took her to court, she was pregnant with their youngest son, Jaan. "Now again, at this age, I have to go through this. I will meet Sanu in the court after 31 years," she stated emotionally.
In response to the notice, Rita Bhattacharya confirmed she is planning to file a counter-case. Concluding with a heartfelt plea, she said, "I will see him in the court. And I will request Sanu with folded hands—just try to be a good human being and be the father of my three children. If you can't love us, at least don't disturb us and don't harass us anymore."
