Kylie Minogue, the iconic singer behind hits such as 'Chiggy Wiggy,' 'All the Lovers,' and 'Padam Padam,' has released a three-part documentary series titled 'Kylie.' The series delves into her personal life, showcasing memories, photographs, and the headline-making love story that fans have long speculated about. While much of Minogue's life has been public, one question has persisted: Why did she and Jason Donovan break up? The documentary sheds light on the tragedy of the 1990s, featuring Donovan himself, who comments on their not-so-happily-ever-after.
The Love Triangle of the 1990s
Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan first met on the set of the Australian soap opera 'Neighbours' and quickly fell in love. After dating for a couple of years in the late 1980s, they decided to part ways, despite being one of television's most beloved couples. Shortly after their breakup, Minogue began dating the late Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS, until 1991. Hutchence tragically passed away in 1997. In the documentary, Donovan recalls the first time he and Minogue met Hutchence. 'He was not interested in me. I could tell he was focused on her, absolutely,' Donovan said, according to Digital Spy. He added, 'Love hurts, mate.'
Kylie Minogue's Response to Jason Donovan
Reacting to Donovan's comments in the series, Minogue admitted that his words were heartfelt and moving. 'Love hurts, mate,' that is the quote, and he's not wrong. It does sometimes, so I appreciated his honesty so much. And hilarious. And F-bombs. He's so Jason Donovan. I can see just him being him,' she told Variety. While she reflected on many first-time moments with Hutchence, she acknowledged that Donovan was a significant part of her life. 'We stumbled into fame together. We were rocking up to 'Neighbours' every day. Then we were dating, then we were navigating mayhem. Mayhem! So props to Jason,' she stated.
Jason Donovan Opens Up About His First Love
In a previous interview with Big Issue in 2025, Donovan opened up about the breakup and the lasting impact it had on him. Claiming that Kylie Minogue was his first love, he said the split was not easy. 'She and I were so connected personally and professionally, it's a very difficult relationship to escape. And not only that, we were in everyone's living room across the world. It's quite a unique position,' he said. Despite the emotional turmoil, the duo has remained friends over the years and continues to support each other.
The documentary series 'Kylie' is available for streaming on Netflix.
