A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, the country's seismological agency said, adding that no damage was expected from the tremor.

The quake hit 164 kilometers (102 miles) southeast of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental province at a depth of 86 kilometers, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs stated that no damage or aftershocks are anticipated from the earthquake. The agency continues to monitor the situation.

The earthquake occurred in a seismically active region, but due to its depth and location offshore, it did not pose a significant threat to populated areas.
