Bengaluru: A viral video clip showing a high-end Lamborghini bearing registration number KA05NR0009, allegedly owned by late underworld operator Muthappa Rai’s son Ricky Rai, being driven at high speed on Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Road while emitting loud exhaust noise and flames has triggered a police probe.
The video was uploaded on Instagram by the account ‘rai_6600’ on May 20. According to DCP (north traffic) Jayaprakash, based on footage circulating on social media, Devanahalli traffic police have issued a notice to Ricky seeking an explanation on the matter.
Details of the Incident
The video purportedly shows the Lamborghini being driven while emitting modified exhaust sounds. In a dramatic display, flames can also be seen shooting out of the vehicle’s exhaust, raising concerns over public safety and possible traffic violations. The notice was served Saturday under Sections 52, 177, 184 and 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, and Section 281 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In the notice, police stated that on May 20, at 12.09am, the vehicle was being driven in a dangerous and reckless manner on KIA Road, making extremely loud noises and endangering the life and safety of the public. The manner in which the vehicle was driven endangered public safety, created fear, anxiety and insecurity among road users, and violated legal rules governing driving on public roads, the notice added.
Legal Notice and Response
Ricky has been directed to appear before the authorities, along with the vehicle and relevant documents, within three days of receiving the notice and submit a written explanation. The notice warned that failure to appear within the stipulated period would result in appropriate legal action under applicable laws without further notice.
A senior officer said Ricky explained over phone that the video was recorded when the car was heading towards Sadahalli toll plaza. He is said to have claimed that flames are emitted when the vehicle is driven at 10-15kmph and the accelerator is pressed suddenly as it picks up speed. Police asked him to submit his explanation in writing.
Previous Controversy
The latest controversy comes barely months after the same Lamborghini was embroiled in a high-profile drifting case. On March 21, the luxury car was allegedly used for dangerous drifting stunts near MG Road. Ricky initially denied involvement. However, CCTV footage established that he was driving the vehicle, following which an FIR was registered at Cubbon Park police station.
