Madhuri Dixit on Being Unknown in US: 'I Was Just Mrs Nene'

Madhuri Dixit Nene, one of Bollywood's most celebrated stars, recently opened up about her life after marriage and the unique experience of being largely unknown in the United States. The actress, who left the industry at the peak of her stardom to settle in Denver after marrying Dr Sriram Nene, shared her insights during an interview with HT City.

Life as Mrs Nene in Denver

Madhuri revealed that in Denver, she enjoyed a sense of anonymity. 'In Denver, it was smooth and nicer because there were less Indians there. Where I lived, mostly there were Americans. For a long time, they didn't know who I was, I was Mrs Nene there,' she said. She described the experience as liberating, as she could focus on her family and children without the constant attention of fame.

The actress recounted a humorous incident where her neighbors became suspicious of a car repeatedly circling her house. 'My neighbours called me… vahaan darr laga rehta hai that someone could be trying to rob us, so people are careful. The neighbour asked, should I call the cops? I said please don't! I had to tell them I am a celebrity, and that the people in the car were trying to get a glimpse of me,' she shared.

A Fulfilling Period Away from Fame

Madhuri described those years away from the limelight as one of the most fulfilling periods of her life. 'I was free to do anything at any time. I enjoyed so much of me time with my kids. It was a big part of my dream in life… that I have a husband who I love, with kids. I was living my dream there,' she said.

After many years of marriage and raising two children, Arin and Ryan, Madhuri moved back to India in 2011 and resumed her career. She also spoke about her husband's initial unawareness of her stardom. 'He knew she is an actor, but didn't know how big an actor she is,' she noted. Dr Nene has since become deeply connected with the film fraternity, even having more friends in the industry than she does now.

Current Projects and Outlook

Madhuri expressed contentment with her current life, saying, 'It's all good today, our kids are growing up, I have enjoyed playing the character of Rekha in Maa Behen. I am in a good place.' The actress continues to balance her family life with her career, cherishing the journey she has undertaken.
