Michael Keating, the celebrated British actor, has died at the age of 79. His agent confirmed the news to the Press Association, as reported by Spectrum News.
A Storied Career Across British Television
Keating was born in North London in 1947 and began his acting career in 1966. Over more than four decades, he built an impressive body of work across some of British television's most beloved programmes. He is best known for his role as Reverend George Stevens in the long-running soap opera 'EastEnders' and as the roguish criminal mastermind Vila Restal in the cult sci-fi drama 'Blake's 7'.
Memorable Roles in EastEnders and Beyond
Keating played Reverend George Stevens in 'EastEnders' from 2005 to 2017. He regularly shared scenes with the late June Brown, who portrayed Dot Cotton. As Walford's local priest, he officiated at numerous christenings, weddings, and funerals. One of his most memorable appearances came in 2017 when he led prayers at Ronnie Mitchell's graveside funeral, attended by mourners including Jack and Max Branning.
For science fiction enthusiasts, Keating holds a special place as the only actor to appear in all 52 episodes of 'Blake's 7', playing the witty and cowardly thief Vila Restal. He also appeared in the early 'Doctor Who' story 'The Sun Makers' and the audio drama 'The Twilight Kingdom'. His broader television credits include roles in 'Yes Minister', 'The Bill', 'Casualty', and 'London's Burning'. His final television role was in a 2009 episode of 'Midsomer Murders' titled 'The Dogleg Murders', where he played Derek Painter.
