Mohali Man Dies by Suicide After Harassment by Wife

A 27-year-old man from Mohali, identified as Rohit, a resident of TDI City, allegedly died by suicide after jumping into a canal. His family has accused his wife, Payal, and her parents of mental harassment, prompting the police to register a case against them. The incident has brought to light the strain caused by marital disputes and familial pressure.

Background of the Incident

Rohit married Payal, a resident of Nabha, in February. According to a complaint lodged by his father, Rakesh Kumar, Rohit was repeatedly pressured to live separately from his parents. The family alleged that Payal, who went to her parental home on May 14 after a bereavement, refused to return unless Rohit severed ties with his family. This ongoing dispute allegedly left Rohit deeply distressed.

Events Leading to the Tragedy

On May 31, Rohit left home and did not return. His motorcycle was later discovered near a canal at Tehna village, close to Sirhind. Following this, police launched a search operation. Rohit's body was recovered on Friday and handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination.

Investigating Officer Burma Singh stated that chat records between Rohit and his wife have been submitted as evidence. Preliminary findings indicate that Rohit was under significant pressure to live separately from his parents. A case has been registered under Section 108 of the BNS against Payal, her father Anil Kumar, and her mother Sunita. Police have confirmed that further action will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation.

The tragic death has raised concerns about the impact of familial and marital conflicts on mental health. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the case.
