NCW Chairperson Hears Women's Grievances in Patiala

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Wednesday heard grievances of women during a public hearing in Patiala as part of the 'National Commission for Women on Your Doorstep' programme.

She listened to at least 45 cases, including those related to domestic violence, dowry, sexual offences, and suicide. In several instances, immediate directions were issued to the concerned authorities for action.

Officials Present at the Event

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal and Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma were also present during the hearing. Rahatkar emphasized that providing accessible, sensitive, and timely justice to women remains a top priority for the commission.

Call for Sensitive Approach

Interacting with the media, Rahatkar stated that the use of derogatory language against women, character assassination, and insensitive behavior are unacceptable. She called upon all departments to adopt a sensitive approach while dealing with matters concerning women.

Review Meeting and Initiatives

Following the public hearing, she chaired a review meeting attended by deputy commissioners and senior police officers of the Patiala Division. The meeting focused on the speedy disposal of cases involving women, effective coordination between police and civil administration, and regular monitoring of complaints.

Rahatkar suggested implementing the commission's 'Tere Mere Sapne' initiative at the district level and urged officials to ensure that the benefits of women welfare and empowerment schemes reach beneficiaries at the grassroots level.

Workshop on POSH and Anti-Human Trafficking Programme

Later, Rahatkar addressed a workshop on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace (POSH) at Thapar University. She also participated in an anti-human trafficking programme on the ITBP campus.
