Veteran Bollywood actor Neena Gupta has shared a deeply personal and painful chapter from her past, revealing she was left heartbroken when her fiance called off their wedding just days before the ceremony. The actor, known for her candour, disclosed that the man offered a flimsy excuse and never provided a real reason for his abrupt decision.
The Last-Minute Heartbreak
In a recent conversation with Humans Of Bombay, Neena Gupta recounted the shocking incident. She was engaged and had even completed the ring ceremony. She had travelled to Delhi to shop for her wedding attire and jewellery, fully prepared to start a new life. The future seemed set until she received a devastating phone call from her fiance.
"He said that we aren't getting married right now," Gupta shared. When she pressed for a reason, he claimed he needed to undergo a sinus operation. The actor found this explanation unconvincing, stating it was not a major issue that should postpone a wedding. To this day, the true reason behind his sudden change of heart remains a mystery to her.
A Proposal Rejected
The story took another turn approximately six months later. The former fiance reappeared in Neena's life, expressing his desire to marry her after all. However, the actor's response was firm and decisive. She told him in no uncertain terms that she was no longer interested.
"I said 'F**k off. Now, I don't want to marry you'," Gupta stated. She tried one last time to get a truthful explanation for the initial postponement, but he still refused to come clean. Reflecting on the experience with remarkable empathy, she added, "We have to take decisions out of helplessness, hence let's not judge people on the basis of their decisions."
Life After the Broken Engagement
This episode preceded another significant, unconventional chapter in Neena Gupta's life. A few years later, she had a relationship with legendary West Indian cricketer Sir Vivian Richards. In the late 1980s, she welcomed her daughter, Masaba Gupta, out of wedlock and raised her as a single mother, boldly defying societal norms of the time.
Neena Gupta eventually found lasting marital bliss much later. She married Delhi-based chartered accountant Vivek Mehra in 2008. On the professional front, the acclaimed actor is gearing up for her next film release. She will be seen in 'Vadh 2', a sequel co-starring Sanjay Mishra. Directed by Jaspal Singh Sandhu, the film is scheduled to hit theatres on February 6.
