Olivia Wilde Reflects on Her Divorce and Whirlwind Marriage

Actress-director Olivia Wilde is opening up about her past marriage and divorce. The 39-year-old star married Tao Ruspoli in 2003 after just a few months of dating, and they separated in 2011 when she was 25. In a recent appearance on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast, Wilde reminisced about their 'romantic and insane' connection.

A Whirlwind Elopement at Burning Man

Wilde revealed that she and Ruspoli, an Italian prince and filmmaker, eloped at the Burning Man festival. The paperwork, which she described as 'probably invalid,' was completed back in Los Angeles by a man they 'found on the internet.' She recalled thinking immediately after the wedding, 'Wait, what the f*** did I just do?' She explained that her spontaneous decision-making was a pattern in her youth, often getting her into trouble.

Marriage as an Act of Rebellion

Wilde described the wedding as 'probably the craziest thing to do' but also 'so romantic and insane.' She noted that getting married was an act of rebellion for her, even though it was through a 'really traditional' institution. She added, 'We did not have a very traditional marriage. It was very bohemian. And I am grateful for it because it meant that I spent most of my twenties that way.'

Divorce at 25

Wilde and Ruspoli announced their separation in February 2011, with their divorce finalized later that year. At the time, Wilde was 25 years old, barely old enough to rent a car. She reflected on the experience, emphasizing the beauty of youth but also the challenges of spontaneous decisions. The couple had been married for several years before parting ways.
