A government-appointed committee has endorsed the ban on the web series 'Satluj', ruling that its content posed threats to national sovereignty and security. The series was pulled from the OTT platform ZEE5 for Indian viewers just two days after its release on July 3, following a directive from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) citing security concerns.
Committee Upholds Ban
The committee, constituted to review the matter, concluded that the web series violated guidelines by depicting sensitive material that could undermine national integrity. According to sources, the panel's decision was unanimous, emphasizing that the content had the potential to incite unrest and endanger public order. The I&B ministry had initially flagged the series under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Details of the Series
'Satluj' was released on ZEE5 with a storyline centered on political and social dynamics in a fictional region, but critics alleged it mirrored real-life events along the India-Pakistan border. The series reportedly included scenes that could be interpreted as glorifying separatist ideologies. The OTT platform complied with the government order and removed the series from its library for Indian audiences within 48 hours of release.
Government's Stand
An official statement from the I&B ministry said, "The content of 'Satluj' was found to be detrimental to the sovereignty and security of India. The government is committed to ensuring that all digital content adheres to the established guidelines." The ministry had earlier issued a notice to ZEE5, directing the immediate removal of the series pending a thorough review.
Impact on OTT Platforms
This case highlights the increasing scrutiny of digital content in India. The ban on 'Satluj' has sparked debate among creators and viewers about censorship and creative freedom. However, the government maintains that such actions are necessary to prevent the spread of divisive narratives. ZEE5 has not yet commented on whether it will appeal the committee's decision.
