A tragic accident occurred off the coast of Vietnam on Monday when a tourist boat capsized, leaving at least 15 people feared dead, including several Indian nationals. The vessel was carrying a group of tourists near the popular destination of Ha Long Bay when it overturned in rough waters.
Details of the Incident
The boat, which was on a sightseeing tour, capsized in the early afternoon local time. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, but by the time they arrived, many passengers had already been swept away by strong currents. According to local authorities, the boat was carrying 30 people at the time of the accident, including tourists from India, China, and Vietnam.
Vietnamese officials confirmed that 15 people are missing and presumed dead. Among the missing are at least six Indian nationals, as per the Indian embassy in Hanoi. The embassy has issued a statement expressing deep condolences and is working closely with Vietnamese authorities to coordinate search and rescue efforts.
Rescue Operations Underway
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with multiple boats and helicopters scouring the area. However, officials have warned that the chances of finding survivors are slim due to the cold water temperatures and the time elapsed since the accident. So far, 10 survivors have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
An official from the Ha Long Bay management board stated, "We are doing everything possible to locate the missing persons. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims during this difficult time." The cause of the capsizing is under investigation, but initial reports suggest that a sudden storm may have caught the boat off guard.
Impact on Tourism
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Vietnam's top tourist attractions, known for its emerald waters and towering limestone islands. This incident is likely to raise concerns about safety standards for tourist boats in the area. In recent years, there have been calls for stricter regulations following several accidents involving tourist vessels.
The Indian government has assured full support to the affected families. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the tragic boat accident in Vietnam. Our embassy is in close touch with local authorities to provide all possible assistance."
