State to Support Victim's Family in Supreme Court
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated on Saturday that the state government will not oppose the family of the Kamduni rape-murder victim in the Supreme Court and will provide them with legal aid. The announcement came as a significant shift in the state's stance on the high-profile case.
Adhikari, who took office recently, made the remarks while addressing the media in Kolkata. He emphasized that the government's priority is to ensure justice for the victim and her family, rather than engaging in legal battles against them.
Adhikari Criticizes Former CM Mamata Banerjee
During his statement, Adhikari took a swipe at his predecessor Mamata Banerjee, criticizing her comments following alleged incidents of rape and murder of women in the state during her tenure. He accused Banerjee of failing to address women's safety adequately and of making insensitive remarks.
"The previous government not only failed to protect women but also made light of heinous crimes," Adhikari said. "Our government will stand with the victims and ensure that justice prevails."
Background of the Kamduni Case
The Kamduni rape-murder case dates back to 2014, when a young woman was brutally raped and murdered in the Kamduni area of West Bengal. The case drew widespread outrage and protests, leading to the arrest of several accused. However, the victim's family has been fighting for justice in the Supreme Court, seeking stricter punishment for the convicts.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing a plea filed by the victim's family, challenging the acquittal of some accused by the Calcutta High Court. The state government had previously opposed the family's petition, but Adhikari's announcement marks a reversal of that position.

Adhikari confirmed that the state government will provide comprehensive legal aid to the victim's family, including covering legal costs and appointing a senior advocate to represent them. The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from political quarters. The ruling party hailed it as a step towards justice, while the opposition accused Adhikari of politicizing the issue. Mamata Banerjee's party, the Trinamool Congress, criticized the move, calling it a publicity stunt.
"This is a desperate attempt by the new government to gain public sympathy," said a Trinamool Congress spokesperson. "They should focus on improving law and order rather than making hollow promises."
Meanwhile, women's rights groups have welcomed the decision, urging the government to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly. The victim's family expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the Supreme Court would deliver a fair verdict.
