The drama 'Perfect Crown' has been embroiled in significant controversy over the past few days. Following allegations of historical distortion and issues with the coronation scene, fans and netizens have also raised concerns regarding the show's funding from the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), which amounted to approximately 2 billion KRW.
KOCCA Funding Revealed, Causes Public Backlash
Naver reported that the drama qualified for funding from KOCCA, a quasi-governmental organization operating under South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The receipt of up to 2 billion KRW in government funding has provoked strong reactions from the public. Many individuals pointed out that while taxpayer money was used to produce the drama, the production team displayed a lack of sensitivity and care, particularly in scenes depicting Korea as a tributary state to China. Additionally, numerous historical inaccuracies were identified, including incorrect costumes and crowns in the coronation scene, as well as the use of wrong congratulatory cheers during the ceremony.
In response to the backlash, KOCCA issued a statement: 'At the time of evaluation, only the project proposal, synopsis, and portions of the script were reviewed.' Netizens have strongly criticized the showrunners for failing to conduct proper research. Furthermore, the lead actors IU and Byeon Woo Seok have issued apologies on multiple occasions, including handwritten notes and public event apologies.
Repercussions After the 'Perfect Crown' Controversy
Following the backlash, fans and netizens called for the show to be taken off the air entirely due to the discrepancies. Specific coronation scenes have been completely removed from the show and from episodes uploaded online. The pop-up store that had been established to support the drama was also closed ahead of schedule because of the controversy. However, offline events have continued as planned.
