High Court Confirms Life Terms for All 38 Convicts
The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, upheld the life imprisonment sentences awarded to all 38 convicts in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case. The court dismissed appeals filed by the convicts, confirming the trial court's verdict delivered in 2022.
The blasts, which occurred on July 26, 2008, involved 21 coordinated bomb explosions across Ahmedabad, killing 56 people and injuring over 200. The attacks were carried out by the Indian Mujahideen terror group.
Background of the Case
A special court in Gujarat had convicted 38 individuals in February 2022, sentencing them to life imprisonment. The trial was one of the fastest in major terror cases in India, with the judgment coming 14 years after the incident. The convicts included key operatives of the Indian Mujahideen, such as Mufti Abu Bashir, who was sentenced to 10 years for conspiracy.
The prosecution argued that the convicts had meticulously planned and executed the blasts to cause maximum casualties. The evidence included CCTV footage, call detail records, and forensic reports linking the accused to the bombings.
Court's Observations
Justice Bela Trivedi and Justice A.J. Shastri, who presided over the appeal, noted that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. "The evidence on record clearly establishes the guilt of the appellants. The trial court's findings are based on sound reasoning and do not warrant interference," the bench observed.
The court also rejected arguments that the convicts had been subjected to custodial torture or that their confessions were coerced.
Impact and Reactions
The verdict was welcomed by victims' families and the state government. Gujarat Law Minister Rushikesh Patel said, "The High Court's decision reaffirms the strength of our judicial system. The convicts have been given a fair trial and their appeals have been thoroughly examined."
According to data from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Ahmedabad blasts case involved the largest number of convicts in any single terror trial in India. The NIA had taken over the investigation in 2009.
Lawyers for the convicts indicated they would appeal to the Supreme Court. "We respect the High Court's verdict but will challenge it in the apex court as we believe there are legal grounds for further review," said defense counsel Salim Khan.
Broader Context of Terror Convictions
The 2008 Ahmedabad blasts were part of a series of terror attacks across India that year, including the Jaipur bombings (May 2008) and the Mumbai attacks (November 2008). The Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.
Security analysts point out that the conviction rate in terror cases has improved due to better forensic evidence and coordination between state and central agencies. However, delays in trials remain a challenge.
