Phantom Studios has filed a lawsuit against JioStar India Private Limited in the High Court over the upcoming film Queen 2, starring Kangana Ranaut. The studio claims it never consented to the production of the sequel and is seeking an injunction to stop the film's release, along with damages amounting to Rs 250 crore.
Background of the Dispute
The original Queen (2013) was produced by Phantom Studios and became a critical and commercial success. According to the suit, Phantom Studios holds the rights to the film and its characters, and any sequel requires explicit approval from the studio. JioStar, which is backing Queen 2, allegedly proceeded without obtaining such consent.
Phantom Studios' legal counsel stated, "Our client has not authorized or licensed any sequel to Queen. The defendants have misappropriated intellectual property and are unjustly enriching themselves." The studio is also seeking a permanent injunction and additional damages for the alleged infringement.
JioStar's Response
JioStar has not yet filed a formal response in court. However, industry sources suggest the company may argue that the rights to the sequel were acquired through a separate agreement with the original film's distributor. The case is expected to be heard later this month.
Impact on the Film's Release
Queen 2 was scheduled for a theatrical release in late 2026. The legal battle could delay the premiere if the court grants an interim injunction. Kangana Ranaut, who reprised her role as Rani, has not commented on the dispute. The sequel also introduces new characters and is set in a different location, but plot details remain under wraps.
According to the suit, Phantom Studios learned of the sequel through media reports and immediately sought legal action. The studio claims that JioStar's actions constitute a breach of contract and copyright infringement, and it is seeking Rs 250 crore in damages for loss of reputation and potential revenue.
