Rainbow flags, colourful umbrellas, and chants of “Hey Hey Ho Ho, Homophobia Has to Go” filled Pune’s streets on Saturday as hundreds joined the city’s Pride March in support of the LGBTQIA+ community. Participants expressed themselves through makeup, sarees, and outfits reflecting their identities.
Self-Expression Takes Centre Stage
Self-expression took centre stage as participants celebrated their identities at the Pune Pride event. “I have loved sarees since Class 4. Even today, I am wearing a sari draped by myself,” said Shubham, an attendee. The march began and ended at Mandai Metro Station, passing through Bajirao Road and Shanipar Road.
“As a millennial, accepting and explaining my identity to family took patience. It would have been easier for Gen Z,” said Reva Kinkar, reflecting on generational differences in acceptance.
Visual Displays of Support
Attendees carried flags and placards to show their support for the community. The vibrant procession included participants of all ages, with many wearing colourful attire and waving rainbow flags. The event highlighted the ongoing fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and the importance of visibility and acceptance in society.
