Raveena Tandon Defends Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Against Online Trolling
Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon has strongly condemned the online trolling directed at Aishwarya Rai Bachchan following her appearance at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May 2026. Tandon described the criticism as "deeply unfortunate and incredibly unfair," pointing to a systemic double standard in how female celebrities are judged compared to their male counterparts.
The Incident at Cannes
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked the red carpet at Cannes in a sculpted blue gown designed by Amit Aggarwal. Photographs and videos from the event quickly went viral, sparking a wave of negative comments about her appearance, weight, and outfit choice. This annual scrutiny has become a recurring pattern for the actor, who has represented India at Cannes for over two decades.
Tandon's Critique of Digital Culture
Speaking to PTI, Tandon said: "It is unfortunate and incredibly unfair. This relentless, hyper-fixation on a woman's aging process, her weight, or her wardrobe choice is an ongoing toxic trait of our digital culture." She emphasized that such behavior reflects a broader cultural problem where women are expected to remain eternally youthful while men are allowed to age naturally without criticism.
Tandon, who is currently promoting her film 'Welcome to the Jungle,' added: "Aishwarya is an absolute global icon who has represented our country with unparalleled dignity and grace on international platforms for decades. To reduce a woman of her stature, achievements, and intelligence down to a bad camera angle or an experimental dress is just miserable behavior."
Double Standards in Bollywood
The 53-year-old actor highlighted the disparity in how male and female stars are treated: "It reveals a broader, everyday cultural double standard, like we demand our female stars remain permanently frozen in time, looking exactly like they did twenty years ago, while male actors are allowed to age, change, and grow without an ounce of the same brutal scrutiny." She urged online users to "log off, look inward, and learn to respect women who are living their lives beautifully, maturely, and entirely on their own terms."
Support from Other Bollywood Stars
Tandon is not alone in defending Aishwarya. Actors Madhuri Dixit Nene and Kangana Ranaut also publicly supported her following the online backlash. The incident has reignited discussions about ageism and sexism in the entertainment industry, with many calling for more respectful discourse around women's appearances.
