Rohit Chandel Confesses to Stalking Minor Girl
Rohit Chandel, who was arrested for allegedly stalking a 16-year-old girl, has admitted to the crime, the Mumbai Police said on Wednesday. The confession came during interrogation after his arrest under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Chandel, a television actor known for his role in the show 'Ishq Subhan Allah', was taken into custody on Tuesday. The Mumbai Police's crime branch acted on a complaint filed by the minor's mother, who alleged that Chandel had been harassing her daughter for months. According to police officials, Chandel had been sending inappropriate messages and following the girl, causing her distress.
“He has confessed to stalking the girl. We have registered a case under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and the Indian Penal Code,” said a Mumbai Police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Details of the Case
The victim's mother approached the police after repeated attempts to stop Chandel's behavior failed. The minor, a resident of Mumbai, had reportedly been receiving unwanted attention from Chandel since early 2026. The police investigation revealed that Chandel had used multiple social media accounts to contact the girl.
“The accused admitted to creating fake profiles to communicate with her. He also confessed to following her to her school and other places,” the officer added.
Previous Controversies
This is not the first time Rohit Chandel has been in legal trouble. In 2023, he was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a minor girl from a shelter home in Mumbai. He was later released on bail. The current case has reignited concerns about the safety of minors and the misuse of social media by celebrities.
“We are investigating the extent of his activities. More victims may come forward,” said a senior crime branch official.
Legal Implications Under POCSO Act
The POCSO Act, enacted in 2012, provides stringent punishments for sexual offenses against children. Stalking a minor, especially through digital means, is a serious offense under the act. If convicted, Chandel could face imprisonment of up to five years, along with a fine.
“The confession is a crucial piece of evidence. However, the case will be built on digital footprints and witness statements,” said a legal expert.
Chandel has been remanded to police custody until July 16 for further investigation.
