Ruth Dodsworth Opens Up About Financial Abuse and Coercive Control
Ruth Dodsworth Reveals Financial Abuse in Marriage

British television presenter Ruth Dodsworth has opened up about the financial and emotional abuse she allegedly suffered during her marriage to ex-husband Jonathan Wignall, revealing she was left “absolutely penniless” despite earning her own salary.

Financial Control and Isolation

Speaking on the BBC podcast Ready to Talk with Emma Barnett, the ITV Wales presenter recalled how Wignall allegedly took complete control of her finances over time. Dodsworth said she eventually had “absolutely no access” to her own money and had to ask her husband for cash even to buy lunch. “My salary would go into my bank account but then he would take it out,” she said.

The presenter claimed she would be given exact amounts of money for basic purchases, including supermarket meal deals, leaving her unable to socialise freely with colleagues. She also alleged that her bank card “disappeared” and was never replaced.

Constant Monitoring and Hidden Debts

According to Dodsworth, Wignall frequently monitored her movements, checked on her at work and demanded proof of where she was while filming assignments for ITV Wales. After their relationship ended, she found loans had allegedly been taken out in her name without her knowledge. She was left with a damaged credit rating and struggled to rent a home, with her parents eventually stepping in as guarantors. The presenter also claimed she discovered unpaid bills had put her at risk of eviction.

Emotional Toll and Arrest

Dodsworth described the final years of the marriage as emotionally exhausting and frightening. She would often cry before work and hide in the dressing room before going on air. “My hair was coming out,” she recalled. She also alleged that Wignall once tried to unlock her work phone using her thumbprint while she was asleep.

Wignall was arrested in 2019 and later pleaded guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour and stalking. In April 2021, he was sentenced to three years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court and handed a restraining order preventing contact with Dodsworth.

Rebuilding Life

The presenter said rebuilding her life independently became an emotional milestone, recalling the moment she bought herself a coffee without needing permission from anyone. Ruth Dodsworth is a British television presenter and weather anchor best known for her work with ITV Wales, coming into the national spotlight after speaking about surviving coercive control following Wignall’s conviction.
