Scholars' Body Objects to MLA Lighting Traditional Lamp, Calls It Against Islam
Scholars Object to MLA Lighting Lamp, Say Against Islam

A body of Islamic scholars in Kerala has raised objections to IUML MLA Fathima Thahiliya lighting a traditional lamp at a public event, stating that the practice is against Islamic beliefs. The scholars urged Muslims to refrain from such rituals that are associated with other religions.

Objection to Traditional Lamp Lighting

The controversy erupted after Thahiliya, the MLA from Kozhikode, was seen lighting a traditional brass lamp at a function. Critics argued that this act is incompatible with Islamic teachings, which prohibit practices rooted in other faiths. The scholars' body emphasized that Muslims should strictly adhere to Islamic principles and avoid any rituals that may contradict their beliefs.

Reactions and Defense

While the scholars criticized the act, some supporters of Thahiliya defended her, stating that lighting a lamp is a cultural tradition in Kerala and not necessarily a religious one. They argued that the gesture symbolizes knowledge and prosperity, common across communities. However, the scholars maintained that such practices could lead to religious syncretism and dilute Islamic identity.
