Actress Sharon Stone has revealed that her former husband's reaction to her decision to undergo a bilateral mastectomy effectively ended their marriage, according to E! News. Speaking on David Begnaud's podcast 'The Person Who Believed in Me,' Stone recalled that doctors discovered a large breast tumor and advised the procedure due to suspected cancer.
Sharon Stone's Health Scare
Stone described the tumor as larger than her entire left breast. A doctor visited her home and recommended a bilateral mastectomy, explaining that such tumors are often cancerous. Despite the gravity of the situation, Stone initially resisted accepting the possibility of cancer. "I don't have cancer," she told her doctor, who responded, "You don't get to decide that." Stone insisted she could decide, ultimately choosing the bilateral mastectomy for survival.
Husband's Reaction
Stone's then-husband strongly opposed her decision. "My husband said, 'This is ridiculous,' and got up and left the room," she recalled. When asked what he found ridiculous, Stone said he was furious about the mastectomy itself. Host Begnaud noted the husband seemed more upset about the breast removal than the cancer risk. Stone replied, "No, no." Her doctor intervened, telling the husband, "If I had more patients like her, we'd have more women alive today. You need to sit down." Stone asserted, "I make the decisions, not you."
End of Marriage
Stone said this exchange marked the end of their relationship. "That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over," she stated. "It was just over in the room. You could just tell." She added that he thought she was ridiculous and foolish, making too many decisions herself. Fortunately, the tumors were later found to be benign.
Previous Marriage
Stone did not name the former spouse, but she was married to journalist and editor Phil Bronstein from 1998 to 2004. The couple adopted their son Roan in 2000. Stone was previously married to television producer Michael Greenburg from 1984 to 1990. She later adopted two more sons, Laird and Quinn.
