Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha has firmly dismissed speculation about his involvement with a rebel faction within the party, reiterating his unwavering loyalty to party chief Mamata Banerjee. In a statement on Thursday, Sinha declared that he will not abandon Banerjee, who stood by him during a difficult period following his defeat in the 2019 general elections.
Sinha Rejects Split Rumors
Addressing the media, Sinha said, "There is no question of me leaving Mamata Banerjee. She supported me when I needed it most, and I cannot forget that. I am fully committed to the 'Joda Phool' (TMC's election symbol)." His remarks come amid growing internal turmoil within the Trinamool Congress, with reports of a faction led by rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claiming that several lawmakers are backing a separate bloc aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Background of the Rebellion
Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a TMC MP from West Bengal, recently alleged that a number of party MPs are dissatisfied with the current leadership and are considering forming a separate group that would support the NDA. This has intensified speculation about a potential split in the party, which has been grappling with internal dissent both in Parliament and the state assembly.
Sinha, however, dismissed these claims as baseless. "I have no knowledge of any such bloc. My loyalty is to Mamata Banerjee and the TMC. Anyone spreading rumors about me joining a rebel group is misinformed," he added.
TMC's Internal Challenges
The Trinamool Congress has been facing mounting internal challenges in recent months. Several MPs and MLAs have expressed discontent over organizational decisions and leadership style. The party's performance in recent by-elections and municipal polls has also raised questions about its electoral viability. Despite these challenges, Sinha's reaffirmation of support provides a boost to Banerjee's leadership.
Shatrughan Sinha's Political Journey
Shatrughan Sinha, a former Union minister and longtime BJP member, joined the TMC in 2022 after being expelled from the BJP for anti-party activities. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Asansol constituency on a TMC ticket. His political career has seen several ups and downs, including a defeat in the 2019 elections when he contested as a BJP candidate. Sinha has often credited Banerjee for helping him revive his political career.
As the TMC navigates through internal strife, Sinha's statement is seen as an effort to consolidate party unity. However, with the rebel faction gaining momentum, the coming weeks could prove crucial for the party's stability.
