Stan, Reinsve Emotional as 'Fjord' Gets 10-Minute Ovation at Cannes

Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve were visibly emotional at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night as their family drama 'Fjord' received a 10-minute standing ovation following its premiere. The film, directed by Cristian Mungiu, was screened at the Grand Palais and elicited powerful reactions from the audience for its poignant story about a Romanian family living in Norway whose lives unravel after state authorities remove their children due to alleged abuse.

The Plot of 'Fjord'

According to Variety, 'Fjord' centers on the Gheorghiu family, headed by a Romanian father portrayed by Stan and a Norwegian mother played by Reinsve. The family relocates to a serene Norwegian village, where they attempt to build a new life. However, they soon come under scrutiny, leading to the removal of their children and triggering a harrowing legal and personal crisis. The narrative explores the clash between strict religious beliefs, societal norms, and state power.

Audience Reaction at Cannes

The Cannes audience reacted intensely during the screening, with audible gasps as the parents grappled with the loss of their teenagers, preteens, and infant. After the film, Mungiu addressed the crowd in both French and English, expressing gratitude: "I want to thank everybody here for trusting me." He noted that Cannes remains a crucial benchmark for his work and a test of a film's enduring impact. The story follows the Gheorghius after they settle in the mother's remote birthplace near a bay, where they befriend the neighboring Halberg family. As the children from both families grow close, the Gheorghius' lives are upended when suspicions arise about their behavior.
