Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day
Observed annually on May 18, Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day marks the end of the nearly three-decade-long Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009. The conflict concluded at Mullivaikkal in Sri Lanka’s Mullaitivu district following the death of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. According to United Nations estimates, tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were killed in the final phase of the war, making Mullivaikkal a lasting symbol of civilian suffering and wartime tragedy.

In his message, Vijay reaffirmed his government's support for the rights of Tamils living abroad. He emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during the conflict and ensuring that the global Tamil community receives continued backing. The Chief Minister's remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka and the need for reconciliation.
