In a move that challenges societal norms, Guntur West MLA Galla Madhavi has appointed a transgender woman as her personal assistant (PA). The TDP legislator selected 22-year-old Varshini, a BCom graduate, for the role, drawing widespread appreciation from IT minister Nara Lokesh, who described it as a "golden standard" for others to emulate.
Background of the Appointment
Madhavi, who has previously raised transgender welfare issues in the assembly and advocated for a dedicated policy, met with a group of transgender leaders in January. During the meeting, she inquired about educated individuals among them and was surprised to learn that some members held B Tech degrees. She immediately offered them jobs in her own firm.
However, there was no response until April. It was only after Madhavi felicitated transgender women on International Women's Day that Varshini approached her, expressing a desire to leave begging and take up employment. "It took time for them to believe in an MLA as they lost trust in society due to the rejections they faced everywhere," Madhavi explained.
Varshini's Journey
Varshini lost her father as a child and lived with her mother, a domestic helper, and her brother, who works at an automobile showroom. She identified as a normal boy until high school but later realized she was different. "I faced humiliation at school but decided to continue my studies. We may earn money, but respect comes only through education," she said.
Madhavi emphasized that she chose Varshini as her PA to give her dignity. "Today, everyone who meets me respects her. I don't mind if it's out of compulsion. It's our minimum responsibility to show compassion and basic human respect regardless of gender," she added.
Reactions and Impact
Lauding Madhavi, TDP national working president Nara Lokesh said this is the kind of "progressive change" society needs. "Salute to Galla Madhavi garu. By appointing a transgender person as her PA, she proves that leadership is about empowering the marginalized," he posted on X.
This appointment sets a precedent for inclusive employment practices and highlights the potential of transgender individuals when given equal opportunities.
