A 16-year-old boy suffering from schizophrenia has been charged with culpable homicide after he fatally stabbed his 8-year-old sister while imitating a sword-fighting video he had been watching on his mobile phone, according to police reports.
Incident Details
The tragic event took place around 2:30 am on April 15 at the family's residence in Amrutnagar, Mumbra. The girl's father, a college teacher, was awakened by her cries and discovered his son holding a knife and his daughter bleeding profusely from a neck wound. She was rushed to Bilal Hospital and later transferred to the civic-run CSM Hospital. Despite receiving intensive care for four days, she succumbed to her injuries on April 19.
Medical Findings
The preliminary post-mortem report indicated that the cause of death was liquefactive necrosis of the brain, a complication arising from the stab wound.
Accused's Statement
The accused told police that he had been watching a video featuring a man fighting with a sword. While replicating the moves, the knife accidentally struck his sister.
Father's Account
The father informed police that his son had been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia for the past two years. Schizophrenia is a severe mental health disorder that impairs a person's ability to think, feel, and behave clearly, often causing them to lose touch with reality. Initially, the father declined to file a complaint, but the Mumbra police registered the case on behalf of the state.
Legal Action
The boy has been booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, on the grounds that the act was carried out without intent to kill.
