Tharoor Compares India and Thailand Tourism Costs, Sparks Debate
Tharoor on India vs Thailand Tourism Costs Sparks Debate

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently sparked a debate on travel costs and tourism promotion with his comments comparing India and Thailand. Speaking at an interaction with the Indian diaspora in Thailand, Tharoor highlighted the irony that Thailand remains cheaper for tourists despite its higher per capita income.

Tharoor on Travel Costs

Tharoor stated, "Thailand is historically very much cheaper to visit for a tourist than India is. And that's a bit ironic because in many ways your per capita income is higher than ours, so we should actually be cheaper than you." This observation drew attention to the affordability gap between the two destinations.

Critique of Tourism Promotion

Tharoor also criticized the marketing efforts by government officials, except for notable campaigns like the Incredible India initiative by Amitabh Kant. He said, "A lot of that is not well done by government officials. They're schooled in a different way, a different approach to things."

Role of Private Sector

He argued that tour operators and travel companies should take the lead in attracting visitors. "What you need is tour operators, the private sector, and tour people... not just staying in India and welcoming people, but also coming out and attracting people to come by selling packages," Tharoor said.

Infrastructure and Support

Tharoor emphasized the need for government support in improving infrastructure, regulations on hawking, begging, sanitation, and waste disposal in tourist areas. "The government can facilitate a lot of things by improving infrastructure... all sorts of things can be improved with government infrastructure support," he added.

The Remark That Went Viral

One of his most talked-about comments was, "I think Bangkok gets in one month more tourists than the whole of India gets in a year." This comparison quickly spread across social media.

Social Media Reactions

Users offered diverse perspectives. One user wrote, "Its not about cheaper. India simply doesn't know how to host international tourists... What tourist wants to be confronted by extreme poverty and pollution every day?" Another commented, "Think about locals first... Tourists will come right along." A third user said, "He's exactly right. Thailand is cheaper. And cleaner. And traffic is more disciplined."
