Kolkata police arrested Paritosh Dutta on Thursday in connection with the alleged irregularities and recovery of cash and arms at Surendranath College. Dutta, a Trinamool Congress functionary and a college vendor, was named in the FIR and apprehended in Burdwan.
Arrest and Background
Dutta is reportedly a close associate of Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a former governing body member and the primary accused in this case. Bandyopadhyay is currently absconding. The arrest comes after police recovered a firearm and two suitcases filled with cash—most of which was destroyed by termites—from the college union room on Tuesday.
Charges Filed
Police have booked both Dutta and Bandyopadhyay under the Arms Act, criminal trespass, criminal intimidation, and sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Investigators allege that the two entered into a criminal conspiracy and forcefully locked several rooms on the ground floor of the college, including the students' union room, using them for their own purposes over an extended period.
College Report and Department Inquiry
The college submitted a detailed report to the higher education department on Wednesday. Sources indicate that the department has asked college officials to prepare the governing body resolution passed to construct these rooms as restrooms, along with the purpose. Additionally, the college authorities may receive an order to submit the purpose of constructing this floor, the reason for constructing additional classrooms, and the source of funding. However, college authorities told TOI they have not yet received any official order from the department.
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators are questioning Dutta to gather information about Bandyopadhyay's whereabouts. The probe continues as police seek to uncover the full extent of the alleged irregularities.
