The Alipore court on Friday remanded Trinamool functionary Swarup Biswas, brother of former state sports minister Aroop Biswas, in police custody until June 18. Biswas was arrested on Thursday on multiple charges, including attempt to murder, sexual harassment, extortion, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy, and sections under the Arms Act.
The New Alipore Police arrested Biswas following a complaint filed by a woman associated with the Tollygunge Make-Up Artists' Federation. He was produced in court around 11:30 am on Friday, ahead of schedule, to avoid a large group of protesters who had reportedly planned a demonstration against him outside Lalbazar around noon.
Prosecution's Arguments in Court
During the hearing, public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal highlighted that Biswas is an influential person and the brother of a former powerful minister. He stated that several individuals alleged they had paid money to Biswas and called for an investigation to determine how many people were involved and how the funds were used.
Defense's Response
Biswas's counsel contended that he had no connection with the allegations and pointed out the absence of CCTV footage to support the claim that he intimidated anyone with a weapon.
Complainant's Allegations
Police reported that the complainant, a resident of the Regent Park area, claimed she was denied work opportunities for nearly two years and was asked to pay money in exchange for assignments. She also alleged being threatened when she sought work. Authorities are investigating additional claims that several others were intimidated into paying large sums of money.
On Friday, the woman told reporters that Biswas made sexually inappropriate demands, telling her she would have to be his "preferred person" and "bed partner" to continue working. After she refused, she claimed she was effectively barred from work and threatened with dire consequences. The complainant said she felt unsafe at her workplace and spent days at home out of fear.
Protest After Arrest
Following Biswas's arrest from his home on Thursday evening, protesters gathered outside the New Alipore Police Station, raising slogans against him and demanding strict action. They also threw eggs at Biswas and damaged cars parked outside the police station.
