Kolkata: Actor and former Trinamool MLA Soham Chakraborty was booked in a fresh fraud case on Friday after a complaint was lodged at Charu Market Police Station. The complaint, filed by Kaushik Karmakar, alleges that Chakraborty and his production company cheated an investor of Rs 1 crore in connection with a 2023 film that starred Chakraborty and Jadavpur MP Saayoni Ghosh.
Details of the Alleged Fraud
According to the complaint, representatives of Chakraborty's company approached Karmakar's firm in mid-2022, introducing themselves as producers involved in films and web series. They highlighted Chakraborty's stature as an actor and claimed they lacked sufficient capital to complete the project 'Laal Suitcaseta Dekhechhen?'. The company sought an investment of Rs 80 lakh. Karmakar initially hesitated but later agreed after Chakraborty personally visited his office and persuaded him to fund the project. The firm invested Rs 80 lakh.
Despite receiving the funds, the production was not completed. The company later sought an additional Rs 25 lakh, which was also paid. However, no response was received from Chakraborty thereafter. Police have registered an FIR under charges of cheating and related offences.
Previous Complaint Against Soham Chakraborty
This is not the first time Chakraborty has faced such allegations. Days earlier, film producer Tarun Das lodged a cheating complaint against him at Balurghat Police Station. Das alleged that Chakraborty accepted an advance payment of Rs 15 lakh to play the lead role in a film but failed to report for shooting. When Das sought a refund, Chakraborty allegedly threatened him. Chakraborty has denied the allegations and accused Das of threatening him instead.
