UK Teacher Charged with Murder of Adopted Son, Court Hears

The Preston Crown Court has heard that a teacher charged with the murder and abuse of his 13-month-old adopted son called for medical help as the child was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unconscious. The prosecution revealed that Jamie Varley, 37, brought Preston Davey to the hospital after the child lost consciousness.

Prosecution's Case

According to reports from BBC News and The Guardian, testimony presented to the jury details the events at the hospital. Prosecutors claim Preston suffered severe mistreatment while in the care of Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32. The young boy allegedly endured frequent beatings, sexual assaults, and the production of indecent images. A post-mortem examination revealed nearly 40 injuries across his body.

Medical Testimony

Medical professionals described the immediate aftermath of Preston's admission. Dr. Wendy Aubrey, a senior anaesthetist, stated that Preston's lungs showed no water, contradicting Varley's account that he left the baby alone in a bath for a few minutes and returned to find him in trouble. Dr. Aubrey noted that under such circumstances, water inhalation would be expected.

Dr. Anthony Kearns, an accident and emergency consultant, described the child's condition during resuscitation attempts. Preston's body showed no evidence of moisture, and his nappy was still intact.

Witness Observations

Witnesses provided insight into the behavior of both accused. Dr. Aubrey noted that one parent stood quietly while the other was highly agitated and emotional, shouting appeals to save the child's life and making an incriminating statement. Paramedic Simon Crabb described Varley as hysterical during the ambulance journey, while McGowan-Fazakerley was less so.

Charges

Varley faces charges of murder, sexual assault, child cruelty, grievous bodily harm, and making indecent images of a child. McGowan-Fazakerley is charged with child cruelty and sexual assault. Both defendants contest the charges.

Court Proceedings

The court adjourned on Tuesday and will reconvene Wednesday morning as evidence continues. The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting safeguarding responsibilities in adoptive care.
