Governor's Remarks Spark Debate on Gender Roles
Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday sparked a fresh debate on gender roles when she advised women to focus on parental responsibility and cooking before pursuing careers such as becoming an IAS officer or a teacher.
Speaking at an event, Patel said, "Whether you become an IAS officer or a teacher, first become an expert mother. Everyone should know how to cook the food prepared at home." Her remarks were made during a function in Lucknow, according to a statement released by the Raj Bhavan.
Context of the Statement
The governor's comments come amid ongoing discussions about women's empowerment and workforce participation in India. According to the World Bank, female labor force participation in India has declined from 30% in 1990 to around 24% in 2023. Patel's advice appears to emphasize traditional domestic roles, which critics argue could undermine efforts to increase women's economic independence.
Anandiben Patel, a former school teacher and Gujarat's first woman chief minister, has previously spoken about the importance of family values. However, this is the first time she has explicitly linked women's career aspirations to domestic duties.
Reactions and Criticism
The remarks drew sharp criticism from women's rights activists and opposition leaders. Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted, "In the 21st century, telling women to first become 'expert mothers' before IAS is regressive. Women can excel in both spheres without being lectured."
On social media, many users accused the governor of reinforcing patriarchal stereotypes. One user wrote, "Does the governor expect men to also become expert fathers and learn cooking?" Others defended her, saying she was merely emphasizing the value of family skills.
Official Clarification
Later, a Raj Bhavan official clarified that the governor's statement was taken out of context. "She was addressing a gathering of women self-help groups and spoke about the need to balance professional and personal life. She did not discourage women from pursuing careers," the official said, requesting anonymity.
However, the full transcript of Patel's speech has not been released, and the controversy continues to trend on social media platforms.
