Kolkata: A 24-year-old female advocate and her brother were physically assaulted, and the former was subjected to threats of sexual violence, after objecting to a lewd comment passed by a motorcyclist in the VIP Bazar Khaldhar area on Sunday night.
The incident occurred between 8.40 pm and 9 pm when the complainant, an advocate residing in Anandapur, was travelling in a car with her two brothers, one of whom is also a practicing lawyer. According to the police complaint, an unknown motorcyclist intercepted their vehicle and made a highly derogatory, obscene remark targeting the woman in public.
When her brother lowered the car window to object to the harassment, the motorcyclist aggressively attempted to snatch the vehicle’s ignition keys. As the victim intervened to defuse the situation, the rider quickly mobilized a mob of 9 to 10 associates. The group surrounded the car, launched a brutal physical assault on the victim’s brother, and vandalized the vehicle. They allegedly threatened the woman with rape in front of onlookers. The mob fled the spot before police arrived.
Before the escalation, the victim’s brother managed to photograph the registration plate of the accused’s motorcycle. The Anandapur Police have seized this photographic evidence to identify the vehicle’s owner. Controlled directly by the OC, a specialized team has initiated a manhunt across the city to apprehend the rider and his associates.
The Anandapur Police Station has registered a criminal case (Case No. 245, dated 15.06.2026) under sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), and 54 (abetment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of public harassment and violence against women in urban areas. Authorities are urged to take swift action to ensure justice for the victims and deter such crimes in the future.
