Hanumankind Reflects on Kochi Homecoming and Bengaluru's Special Energy Ahead of Concert
Hanumankind on Kochi Homecoming, Bengaluru Show & Creative Process

Fresh from a homecoming-filled performance in Kochi as part of his Home Run tour, rapper, singer, and songwriter Hanumankind is eagerly preparing for his upcoming show in Bengaluru. Still buzzing from what he calls a "very wholesome, very homely — but also damn rowdy and hectic" night, the artist reveals that the Kochi gig felt like a genuine return to his roots.

A Heartfelt Homecoming in Kochi

"I went home that night feeling like I’d actually gone home," Hanumankind says, reminiscing about family, friends, and even his father attending the energetic event. He emphasizes that Bengaluru holds a similar place in his heart, despite not having a permanent residence there. "Even without a place of my own, the friendships, collaborators, and memories here anchor me," he explains.

Bengaluru's Unmatched Vibe

After acknowledging the city's notorious traffic, Hanumankind praises Bengaluru's distinctive energy. "It’s the energy. I miss that. The city lets you exist in layers. Bengaluru has a vibe no other city really touches," he states. Having spent six or seven years there, he notes that memories flood back with each visit, creating a powerful emotional connection.

Creative Philosophy and Personal Growth

Hanumankind delves into his creative mindset, asserting that comfort is the enemy of progress. "I don’t feel comfortable anywhere. The only way you grow is to get out of your comfort zone," he remarks. He cites his collaboration on the Kannada song "Maadeva" with Charan Raj and Sanjit Hegde as an example of taking risks that paid off.

Anticipating the Bengaluru Concert

Looking ahead to his Bengaluru performance, Hanumankind expresses deep gratitude for the city's early support. "Bengaluru is special — it embraced me before anyone else did. They gave me a chance when nobody had to," he says. He anticipates a heartfelt reunion with longtime fans who have witnessed his journey from the beginning.

Artistic Expression and Societal Reflection

When asked about his personal lyrics and potential offensiveness, Hanumankind stresses the importance of authentic expression. "Freedom of expression in India isn’t the same as in other countries, but it doesn’t mean you stop expressing yourself," he notes. He believes music should be a truthful outlet, regardless of public reaction.

Staying Grounded Amidst Noise

Amidst external opinions and expectations, Hanumankind focuses on maintaining his sanity by concentrating on what he loves. "Staying sane, for me, is about recognising that I get to do something I love, support my family, and work with people I care about," he shares. He acknowledges that hip-hop, like all art, reflects societal issues such as pain, frustration, and anger in today's world.

Evolution of Hip-Hop and Cultural Identity

Hanumankind observes that while hip-hop's core definition remains unchanged for him, its surrounding atmosphere has evolved with societal shifts. He also addresses feeling caught between cultural perceptions, stating, "When I’m in India, I’m often seen as too American, and when I’m abroad, I’m too Indian." However, he rejects the need to prove his Indianness, advocating for natural representation.

Navigating Digital Consumption and Inspiration

In an era dominated by short-form content and reels, Hanumankind acknowledges information overload but emphasizes limiting screen time. He finds inspiration in everyday life rather than solely in public figures. "Pay attention to your day-to-day life, and stay present," he advises.

Future Projects and Musical Focus

Looking forward, Hanumankind is centered on music, applying lessons from a year of learning. He expresses excitement about his upcoming U.S. tour in February and new projects, including a more commercial campaign. "After an injury last year, I had a lot of time to reflect, strip things back, and refocus. Now I feel ready again — the world is my oyster," he concludes.
