Singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus has unveiled her surprisingly straightforward strategy for landing major film projects: she simply asks. The 33-year-old artist successfully secured a songwriting credit for the upcoming 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' by directly pitching herself to legendary director James Cameron.
The D23 Expo Pitch That Started It All
According to a report in People magazine, the opportunity arose when Cyrus and Cameron were both honoured as Disney Legends at the 2024 D23 Expo. Cyrus, known for her confident approach, decided to seize the moment. She revealed her conversation tactic, stating she already knew the answer to the common question, 'So what have you been up to?' knowing full well Cameron had been immersed in the Avatar universe for years.
Her pitch was simple yet effective. "I kind of throw it out there as I always do," Cyrus told People. She followed up with a clear offer to the 'Titanic' director: "Just lemme know if you ever need any music." This casual suggestion arrived at the perfect time during the development of the third instalment in the planned five-film Avatar saga.
A Proven Method for Hollywood Success
This wasn't a one-time lucky break for the 'Flowers' singer. Cyrus confirmed this is a tried-and-true method for her. She used a similar technique to land her work on 'The Last Showgirl', starring Pamela Anderson and directed by Gia Coppola. For that film, she wrote "Beautiful That Way," which later earned a Golden Globe nomination.
"I did the same thing to (Last Showgirl star) Jamie Lee Curtis," Cyrus explained. "That's how I ended up doing 'Last Showgirl' and now being a part of 'Avatar'." She described the process with Cameron as organic, noting he even calls them "Legends in law."
From the Oscars to Baby Reindeer
Cyrus is taking this direct approach to the highest levels of Hollywood. She admitted it was a key reason for attending the Oscars this year. "Everybody that came up and introduced themselves, I said, 'Well, if you need any music, I'm around'," she shared.
This even included the creators of Netflix's critically acclaimed and Emmy-winning series, 'Baby Reindeer'. While she humorously admitted uncertainty about what she would write for a potential second season, the offer was still made. "I don't know what I would write for Baby Reindeer season two, but I threw that out there," she said.
Miley Cyrus's story highlights a bold, self-driven approach to career advancement in the competitive entertainment industry, proving that sometimes, the most effective strategy is to simply voice your ambition and availability.
