A cultural evening at a private school in East Midnapore's Bhagwanpur turned into a scene of disgrace and controversy on Saturday night. Renowned Kolkata-based playback singer Lagnajita Chakraborty was allegedly heckled and physically harassed on stage while performing a devotional song. The incident has triggered a major political row and swift police action.
What Happened at the School Annual Function?
The celebrated Bengali vocalist was the invited guest performer for the school's annual function. According to the formal complaint filed by the artist, the atmosphere soured when she began singing 'Joy Maa', a popular devotional track from the film Devi Chowdhurani. Witnesses stated that mid-performance, the school's owner, Mehebub Mallick, interrupted her.
In her written statement, Lagnajita alleged that Mallick used derogatory language and ordered her to stop the song. "When I began the 'Joy Maa' song, the owner, Mehebub Mallick, verbally abused me, saying, 'Enough of this... now sing something secular,'" the complaint read. She further stated, "It wasn't just verbal; I was subjected to physical harassment as well during the commotion."
Immediate Aftermath and Police Response
Following the alleged insult and physical intimidation, Lagnajita and her band members walked off the stage immediately and left the venue. They proceeded directly to the Bhagwanpur Police Station to lodge a formal complaint.
The district administration took serious note of the matter. East Midnapore's Acting Superintendent of Police, Mitun Kumar De, confirmed to the media that an FIR has been registered based on the singer's complaint. He announced that the accused school owner, Mehebub Mallick, has been arrested. "The accused is in custody. We are committed to ensuring he is brought to justice," De said.
Departmental Probe and Ensuing Controversy
In a significant development, the police have also ordered a departmental enquiry against the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the local police station. SP De added that investigators are examining whether there were any procedural lapses by local officers. The police have assured the singer of full cooperation and necessary security.
