Kolkata's cultural scene was illuminated by an evening of classical music as Tabla.Inc, in collaboration with The Kolkata Centre for Creativity, Emami Foundation, and United Religious Initiative, presented 'Rang' at the KCC Amphitheatre. This special event was dedicated to celebrating the vibrant and colorful spirit of the Holi festival, drawing a full house of the city's music aficionados and prominent local musicians.
Dynamic Tabla Performance Kicks Off the Evening
The program commenced with an energetic tabla presentation titled 'Taaltarang,' performed by the talented students of renowned percussionist Tanmoy Bose. The group, consisting of Archishman Sinha Roy, Arko Ghosh, Anchit Majhi, Iraban Jha, Swarnabha Sarkar, and Tabasmo Charaborty, delivered a spirited demonstration set in Teentaal. They skillfully explored both Vilambit (slow) and Drut (fast) tempos, showcasing remarkable energy and precision that captivated the audience from the very beginning.
Sunanda Sharma's Mesmerizing Vocal Performance
The highlight of the evening was the mesmerizing performance by celebrated vocalist Sunanda Sharma, an eminent exponent of the Banaras Gharana and a devoted disciple of the legendary Girija Devi. Renowned for her mastery over Thumri, Tappa, and other semi-classical forms, Sharma has also received invaluable guidance from iconic maestros Kishan Maharaj and Bismillah Khan, enriching her artistic depth.
Sharma presented an evocative and diverse repertoire that perfectly captured the seasonal and emotional essence of Holi. She began with raga-based compositions in Puriya Kalyan and Vasant, skillfully weaving the melodic hues of the occasion. Transitioning seamlessly, she then delved into traditional forms such as Tappa, Chaiti, and Bhajan, all beautifully aligned with the festive theme of 'Rang.' Her performance was a testament to her technical prowess and emotional expressiveness.
Expert Accompaniment Enhances the Musical Experience
Sunanda Sharma was expertly accompanied by Sandip Ghosh on tabla and Debashish Adhikary on harmonium. Their sensitive and supportive playing provided a solid foundation, enhancing the overall musical experience and allowing Sharma's vocals to shine. The synergy between the artists created a cohesive and immersive performance that resonated deeply with the audience.
This concert not only celebrated Holi but also highlighted Kolkata's rich classical music heritage, bringing together emerging talents and established artists in a memorable showcase of Indian classical traditions.
