Bengali Film 'Piklu' Emerges from Eight-Year Hiatus with Special Screening
A Bengali cinematic project that has remained in limbo for nearly eight years is poised to make a dramatic return to public attention this week. The film, titled Piklu, is scheduled for a special screening at Nandan on March 15, an event that is expected to culminate in the announcement of its official release date.
A Long-Awaited Project Finally Sees the Light
Directed and written by Partha D. Mitra, Piklu was completed several years ago but encountered significant production-related hurdles that prevented its release. This upcoming screening represents the film's first public showcase since its completion, marking a pivotal moment for the cast and crew who have waited patiently for this opportunity.
Actor Samrat Mukherji, who plays a key role in the film, emphasized the enduring relevance of the story's themes. "I feel this narrative is profoundly relevant, especially in today's context," he stated. The plot centers on a child navigating emotional turmoil as parents become increasingly consumed by their professional ambitions.
Exploring Family Dynamics and Personal Ambition
The story follows Arko and Antara, an ambitious couple dedicated to building successful careers. Initially, Antara steps back from her professional aspirations after marriage to focus on family life, but she eventually returns to work as both parents become deeply absorbed in their careers. Their daughter is left primarily in the care of a governess, leading to a gradual emotional distance within the family unit.
Mukherji elaborated on the film's exploration of ambition and relationships. "My character and the heroine are both highly ambitious, striving to reach great heights in the modeling world," he explained. "However, the story evolves into a love triangle, examining how relationships transform when personal ambitions begin to dominate life."
According to Mukherji, the narrative ultimately revolves around crisis and emotional conflict. "There is a child facing a crisis, and simultaneously, a character who loses his love undergoes a crisis. The story is fundamentally about these relationships and the complex situations they create," he added.
Cast and Crew Details
The film features child actor Pavi Roychoudhury in the title role. Although Piklu was one of her earliest projects, Roychoudhury has since built a notable career in Bengali cinema and television, with appearances in works such as Bhalobashar Golpo, directed by Raja Sen, and O Mon Bhromon by Raajhorshee De.
The ensemble cast also includes Rahul, Debika Sengupta, Tulika Basu, Biswajit Chakraborty, and Priyaance. The cinematography has been handled by Rana Dasgupta, with editing by Pijush Ghosh. The musical score has been composed by Swagata Dey and Soumitra Kundu, featuring compositions by Rabindranath Tagore.
This special screening at Nandan not only revives hope for the film's eventual release but also highlights the persistent challenges faced by independent filmmakers in navigating production obstacles.
