Kerala Animation Film 'Kingara Kavyam' Earns Prestigious AniMela Selection

In a significant achievement for regional Indian animation, writer-director Rahul Riji Nair's film 'Kingara Kavyam' has been officially selected for the competition section of AniMela. This festival is widely recognized as India's inaugural international animation festival, marking a milestone for the country's creative industry.

A Platform for South Asia's Finest Animation

Expressing his enthusiasm, Rahul Riji Nair shared, "To be selected for such a valuable platform, where South Asia's best films are being screened, is very exciting. There are nine films in the South Asian competition section, and being one among them is truly gratifying." The selection places 'Kingara Kavyam' among the top animated works from the region, showcasing its artistic and narrative merit on an international stage.

From Lockdown Inspiration to Animation Realization

The journey of 'Kingara Kavyam' began unexpectedly during the 2020 lockdown, when Rahul, primarily a live-action filmmaker, felt a compelling urge to venture into animation. "I wrote the script during that time as well. I soon realised that making an animation film requires more money and resources than an independent live-action feature," he recalls. This realization underscored the challenges of transitioning between filmmaking mediums.

Navigating the Complexities of Animation Production

Rahul highlights the distinct workflow of animation compared to live-action. "After more than two years of groundwork, I collaborated with Ananthakrishnan TU, Visakh PK and Lijo Joseph, to create a traditional hand-drawn 2D animation film. Due to various reasons, it took us two years to complete the film," he informs. This collaborative effort resulted in a meticulously crafted piece that honors traditional animation techniques.

Exploring Kochi's Forgotten History Through Animation

The film delves into the intriguing Kappiri Muthappan lore of Kochi, which narrates a love story between an African slave and a native woman, set against the backdrop of the historical slave trade. Rahul explains, "We conducted research to accurately depict the costumes and lifestyle of that era as this is part of our shared history. How many people know that slave trade once existed in Kerala? At its core, the film is a love story between two oppressed people." This focus adds depth and cultural significance to the animation.

Future Prospects and Broader Impact

Currently, Rahul is making plans for a full-length animated feature film, building on the experience gained from 'Kingara Kavyam'. The selection at AniMela not only celebrates this specific project but also highlights the growing potential of Indian animation to address historical and social themes. It serves as an inspiration for filmmakers exploring unconventional stories through animated formats.
