Madikeri: The celebrated play Kindarajogi, written by poet laureate Kuvempu, was recently staged at the tribal colony of Nanachi in Nagarahole, located in Ponnampet taluk. The performance was a collaborative effort between the Tribal Comprehensive Development Arts Organization, Rangayana, and the Kannada and Culture Department. Directed by Vikas Chandra, the production retained the original music composed by the legendary theatre personality BV Karanth.
Involvement of Tribal Children
Approximately 25 children from the Nanachi colony actively participated in the play, showcasing their talents on stage. This initiative aimed to provide exposure and training to young tribal performers who often lack access to formal drama education.
Cultural Performances and Audience Engagement
In addition to the play, a team led by JB Ramesh, president of the Tribal Comprehensive Development Arts Institute, presented songs and dances that depicted the vibrant culture of the bee-keepers community. The performances featured traditional drums and tin instruments, which energized the audience and added a lively atmosphere to the event.
Speeches on the Importance of Theatre
Ramakrishnaiah, Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Dr. Gangubhai Hangal University of Music and Performing Arts, addressed the gathering. He emphasized how stage experience builds courage, self-confidence, and focus in children, and can even support livelihoods. Vikas Chandra, the director, noted that tribal children often lack access to drama training and revealed that Rangayana provided them with ten days of intensive training for this production.
