Maharashtra Plans World-Class Film City in Ramtek with Subhash Ghai's Expertise
In a significant development for the Indian film industry, Nagpur's Ramtek MLA and Minister of State Ashish Jaiswal held a crucial meeting with renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai on Friday. The discussions centered on ambitious plans to establish a world-class film city at Ramtek, with Ghai scheduled to conduct an on-ground assessment of the site in June.
Positive Discussions and Comprehensive Vision
Jaiswal described the meeting as "very positive", highlighting the collaborative spirit between government officials and industry experts. The project is built around an innovative three-part concept that includes Film City, Education City, and Entertainment City. According to Jaiswal, this integrated approach represents a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, aiming to create a comprehensive ecosystem for film production and education.
The meeting was attended by Ghai's family members, technical team, and various domain experts, ensuring a thorough examination of all project aspects. The proposal outlines:
- Advanced filming infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology
- Specialized facilities tailored for OTT (Over-The-Top) production
- A major training center envisioned to be larger than Whistling Woods International, Ghai's prestigious film institute in Mumbai
Employment and Local Talent Development
Jaiswal emphasized that the project would generate substantial employment opportunities while providing a significant platform for local talent. "This initiative will not only boost the regional economy but also nurture creative professionals from Vidarbha and beyond," he stated. The educational component is particularly noteworthy, with plans for a training facility that could potentially surpass existing institutions in scale and scope.
Government Backing and Heritage Integration
The project has received strong governmental support, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis previously announcing in the state budget the development of Maharashtra's third film city near Navargaon in Ramtek. The facility is planned to span approximately 60 acres and forms a crucial part of Phase II of the Ramtek Development Plan.
This initiative is strategically designed to:
- Boost tourism infrastructure in the region
- Preserve and highlight the area's rich cultural heritage
- Position Ramtek as a dual hub for film production and heritage tourism
The project is deeply connected to Ramtek's historical significance, particularly its association with classical Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. His renowned work Meghdootam is believed to have been inspired by the region's natural beauty. Fadnavis had earlier proposed that acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali create a film on Kalidasa set in Ramtek to highlight this cultural legacy and attract visitors—an idea initially discussed by Jaiswal at the Advantage Vidarbha event.
Strategic Positioning and Future Prospects
Officials involved in the project anticipate that this initiative will successfully position Ramtek as a premier destination for film production while simultaneously promoting heritage tourism throughout Maharashtra. The combination of modern film infrastructure with historical significance creates a unique proposition that could attract both domestic and international productions.
With Subhash Ghai's expected site visit in June and continued governmental support, the Ramtek Film City project represents a forward-looking approach to regional development that balances economic growth with cultural preservation. The initiative stands to transform the landscape of Indian film production while creating new opportunities for education, employment, and tourism in the Vidarbha region.
