Maharashtra Government Unveils Plans for Third Film City and Kalidasa Film in Ramtek
In a significant move to enhance cultural and tourism infrastructure, the Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has announced the development of the state's third film city near Navargaon in Ramtek. This initiative, revealed during the budget speech on Friday, aims to transform the historic town into a vibrant hub for film production and heritage tourism.
Boosting Vidarbha's Cultural Legacy
The project is part of the state's broader development plans for the Vidarbha region and will be implemented alongside Phase-2 of the Ramtek Development Plan. This phase focuses on strengthening tourism infrastructure and preserving the area's rich historical heritage. Officials emphasized that the film city, spanning approximately 60 acres, will provide modern facilities for film production, including shooting spaces and post-production support, thereby encouraging regional cinema and creative industries in Vidarbha.
Film on Kalidasa to Highlight Historical Connections
In a parallel effort to showcase Ramtek's deep cultural associations, the government has proposed that acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali produce a film on the classical Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. This proposal, discussed during the Advantage Vidarbha event last month by Minister of State for Finance and Planning Ashish Jaiswal, seeks to highlight the region's historical ties with the poet. Chief Minister Fadnavis stated, "The government plans to make a movie on the renowned poet so that new generations would know about his life and writings." Ramtek is believed to have inspired Kalidasa's celebrated poem Meghdootam, making this initiative a strategic move to attract visitors and promote cultural awareness.
Infrastructure and Implementation Details
To expedite the film city project, the state has instructed the Nagpur district administration to accelerate the transfer of land. The combined initiatives are expected to:
- Provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for film production, boosting local employment and economic growth.
- Enhance tourism through improved connectivity, facilities, and heritage conservation around Ramtek's religious and historical landmarks.
- Position Ramtek as an emerging centre for film production and heritage tourism in Maharashtra, leveraging its cultural legacy to draw national and international attention.
Authorities believe that showcasing Kalidasa's legacy through cinema, coupled with the new film city, will significantly boost tourism and cultural engagement in the region. This holistic approach aligns with the state's vision to integrate historical preservation with modern creative industries, fostering sustainable development in Vidarbha.
