Phantom Studios has dragged JioStar India Private Limited to the Bombay High Court over the upcoming Kangana Ranaut-starrer 'Queen 2', alleging that the sequel is being made without its consent. The suit, filed on July 7, 2026, seeks an injunction against the film's release and damages amounting to Rs 250 crore.
Background of the Dispute
According to Phantom Studios, when the original film 'Queen' was produced in 2014, an agreement was reached between the plaintiff and JioStar stipulating that any future sequel or prequel would require mutual consent and that both parties would hold 50 percent rights. Phantom Studios claims it has not consented to any sequels, adaptations, or derivative works of the film.
The 2014 film 'Queen', written by Anvita Dutt and starring Kangana Ranaut, was a critical and commercial success, winning National Awards for Best Feature Film and Best Actress. The announcement of a sequel came days ago when Kangana Ranaut revealed she had wrapped shooting for 'Queen 2'.
Legal Action and Next Steps
The suit filed by Phantom Studios aims to prevent the release of 'Queen 2' until the matter is resolved. The case is scheduled to be heard by a single bench of the Bombay High Court in due course. Phantom Studios is also seeking Rs 250 crore in damages from JioStar for alleged breach of contract.
As of now, JioStar has not issued a public statement regarding the lawsuit. The legal battle highlights ongoing tensions over intellectual property rights and contractual obligations in the Indian film industry.
