Rhythmia Festival Kicks Off in Patiala with Classical Music and Dance
Rhythmia Festival Begins in Patiala with Classical Music and Dance

The two-day cultural festival 'Rhythmia,' a fusion of classical music and dance, commenced on a vibrant note at the Kalidasa Auditorium in Patiala on Saturday. Organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the event brings together eminent figures from the world of Indian classical music.

Opening Performances

The sultry Saturday evening was transformed into a musical extravaganza as Surbahar exponent Dr Ashwin Mahesh Dalvi captivated the audience with his scintillating performance. He unfolded the profound nuances of Indian classical music through his soulful recital. Steeped in the meditative ethos of the prominent Etawah Gharana, Dr Dalvi manifested the austere grandeur and transcendental gravitas of the 'Dhrupat ang' on the Surbahar. His recital was enriched by 'aalap,' 'jod,' and 'jhala' movements, adding brilliance to the performance.

Accompaniment

Dr Dalvi was complemented with consummate sensitivity by Mrinal Upadhyay on the pakhawaj and Pandurang Pawar on the tabla. Their impeccable accompaniment enhanced the allure of his stellar performance, creating a harmonious blend of rhythm and melody.

Dance-Theatre Opus

Following the musical performance, the seminal dance-theatre opus 'The Game of Dice,' conceived and choreographed by Santosh Nair, held the audience captive for over an hour. Based on the 'Dyuta Krida' episode of the Mahabharata, the work unfolded the subtle intricacies of Kathakali, Chhau, and a surfeit of other contemporary dance forms. Through dance, acting, music, and lighting patterns, the performance brought to life the themes of unbridled power, frayed human egos, dharma, morality, and human values, executed with razor-sharp precision.

Event Significance

The Rhythmia festival is a celebration of India's rich cultural heritage, offering a platform for classical artists to showcase their talents. The event continues on Sunday, promising more enchanting performances that blend tradition with innovation. Residents of Patiala and visitors alike were left awestruck by the melodious fusion of Indian classical music and dance, marking a successful start to the festival.
