Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin presided over a significant cultural event on Friday, presenting the state government's film, television, and student awards at the MGR Film and Television Institute. The ceremony was held at the Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, marking a notable occasion in the region's entertainment and educational sectors.
Comprehensive Awards Distribution Across Multiple Years
The awards ceremony encompassed a broad timeline, recognizing achievements over several years. Specifically, the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards were conferred for seven years, spanning from 2016 to 2022. Additionally, television awards were distributed for nine years, covering the period from 2014 to 2022. Student awards were also presented for six academic years, from 2015–16 to 2021–22, highlighting the institute's commitment to nurturing young talent in the film and television industries.
Prominent Recipients and Merit-Based Selection Process
Among the distinguished awardees were renowned music composer AR Rahman and acclaimed actors Dhanush, Suriya, and Sai Pallavi, who received honors for their contributions to Tamil cinema. In response to criticism regarding alleged bias in the selection of awardees, Udhayanidhi Stalin addressed the concerns directly. He emphasized that a selection committee, chaired by retired judge KBK Vasuki, was established specifically for this purpose. The awards were finalized strictly based on the committee's recommendations, ensuring a transparent and impartial process.
"These awards are fully merit-based," Udhayanidhi stated, reinforcing the integrity of the selection. He acknowledged that it was not feasible to honor everyone simultaneously and clarified that those omitted from this year's list are still valued contributors to Tamil Nadu's cultural landscape. He assured that their recognition would be granted at an appropriate future time.

Despite largely avoiding cultural events in recent years, Udhayanidhi explained that he could not skip this program due to his personal involvement in the industry. He likened attending the event to "returning to a classroom after a long gap," underscoring his deep-rooted connection to Tamil cinema. He praised the industry for emerging as a trendsetter at the national level, particularly in terms of content quality and technical standards.
The primary purpose of the awards, he added, is to recognize outstanding work and encourage continued contributions to the field. Furthermore, Udhayanidhi highlighted the state government's financial commitment, noting that ₹4.15 crore has been allocated over the past four years to conduct international film festivals, demonstrating ongoing support for the arts.
