Under 18: Aishwarya Rajesh and Vikranth Lead Family Crime Drama
Actors Aishwarya Rajesh and Vikranth portray a married couple in the upcoming family crime drama Under 18, directed by debutant Karthik Perumal Sami. The film, rooted in extensive on-ground research, delves into the dark world of crime networks across Tamil Nadu, focusing on the plight of minors entangled in these syndicates.
Inspired by Real-Life Encounters with Trapped Minors
Director Karthik Perumal Sami, who previously worked as an associate director under acclaimed filmmaker Vetri Maaran, conducted in-depth research for the project. He reveals that the story centers on a 17-year-old boy and the brutal realities faced by children coerced into criminal activities. "I met nearly 150 children under 18 who were trapped by organised groups. Many were forced to commit crimes and even take the blame for offences committed by others. Those interactions were shocking and heartbreaking," Sami shares, highlighting the film's gritty and emotional foundation.
Star-Studded Cast and Character Dynamics
In Under 18, Aishwarya Rajesh takes on the role of a bold and determined police officer, while Vikranth plays a physical education teacher. Director Karthik expresses his admiration for both actors, noting their suitability for the project. "I worked with Aishwarya in Vada Chennai. She is grounded and brings intensity to her performances. Vikranth is a wonderful human being and suits the role perfectly," he states, emphasizing their contributions to the film's authenticity.
Supporting Cast and Creative Collaborations
The film also features Kishore as an ethical lawyer, adding depth to the narrative. Karthik shares a long-standing professional relationship with Kishore, dating back to the 2007 film Polladhavan. "I've known Kishore sir since Polladhavan. I admire his thought process and often turn to him for advice, including script-related doubts," the director adds, underscoring the collaborative spirit behind the production.
Music for Under 18 is composed by Sam CS, known for his selective approach to projects. Karthik notes that Sam CS commits only after thoroughly reading and connecting with the script, ensuring a harmonious blend of sound and storytelling.
Mentorship Under Vetri Maaran
Reflecting on his journey, Karthik Perumal Sami credits filmmaker Vetri Maaran as a pivotal mentor. Having worked as his assistant director since Maaran's debut, Karthik has gained invaluable insights into cinema and life. "I've learnt about cinema and life from him. I can share anything I think of with him. Vetri sir creates a space for his ADs to understand the craft and screenplay. He will make ADs sit with him in the editing room and give them a lot of books to read," he explains, highlighting the nurturing environment that shaped his directorial vision.
Under 18 promises to be a compelling exploration of societal issues, backed by a talented cast and crew dedicated to bringing this impactful story to the screen.
